I'm pretty sure it's black, though.

Me: I'm here to drop off my '96 Golf.

VW Auto Shop Guy: 96?

Me: Yeah.

Guy: 96? (Looks out window at my car.) You sure?

Me: Um...yes?

Guy: I think that's a 99.

Me: Uh.

Random Mechanic (goes outside and looks at my car, comes back): That's a 99.

Guy: Whew. I thought I was going crazy.

Me: I'm obviously very connected to this car.

I also get confused about what year my car is. Somewhere in the early 2000s.

So Greg, your car was made sometime between 2000 and...now?

I think so.

See David, the bitches pick on people other than you sometimes. You just provide a nice forum for it.

Just to drive home my mastery of all things auto (sorry for the pun), I just learned that what I described as "the oil light coming on" was actually the coolant light.

But apparently there's a bunch of other little parts I'll have to have replaced in the next few months. Breaking stuff, broken stuff, cracking stuff, etc. For now, it sounds like I mostly just needed coolant, an oil change and a new dash light bulb. Haven't gotten the price yet, but I'm guessing $4,299 or so.

Ouch. Car repair costs suck.

I'm just kidding. The guys only charged me $60 for today's work -- coolant, oil and a new bulb for the AC controls. The other stuff they found totals about $800 in needed repairs, but I can space it out over several months.
